Why Leaking When You Jump Is Common But Not Normal

If you leak urine when you jump, run, sneeze, or laugh, you are not alone. Studies suggest that 1 in 3 women experience stress urinary incontinence at some point in their lives. But while it is common, it is not something you simply have to live with.

Why Does It Happen?

Leaking during impact activities happens when the pressure inside your abdomen suddenly rises faster than your pelvic floor can respond. This can be due to weakness in the pelvic floor muscles, poor coordination between your core and pelvic floor, changes after childbirth or surgery, or hormonal changes during menopause.

Is It Just a Mom Problem?

Absolutely not. Leaking can affect women who have never been pregnant, competitive athletes, and even men especially after prostate surgery. If you are modifying workouts, wearing pads, or avoiding activities you love because of leaking, it is time to get help.
